Common Questions

Through our years of experience we have come to understand the Public Practice jobseeker. At Manpower Professional we are always willing to offer advice. Here are some of the most commonly asked questions, but feel free to connect with any one of our branches for more information on how we can help you in practice.

I haven’t got on a graduate scheme – can Manpower Professional help?

Whilst the majority of graduate recruitment is completed in-house, there have been occasions where Manpower Professional have supplied graduates to the large Public Practice firms.

I want to get into Practice, what can I actively do to enhance my chances?

Experience is key. Make sure you expose yourself to work with large clients and invest heavily in audit experience.

Will a big four company or large Public Practice be interested in me if I have come from a smaller firm?

Yes, but in our experience this is best done upon qualification, when there is more movement within the market. In fact you will often be able to bring a different skill set to the company whilst still being young enough to adapt, and will actively be encouraged by the Practice.

It is worth bearing in mind that some of the best Senior accountants in these large practices have had some small company experience.

How much longer will my hours be?

This is a commonly held misconception. Practice hours vary very little from any other setting. Clearly in some departments, assignment deadlines may necessitate longer hours, but this is ad hoc. In fact quite often practice firms have good flexible working patterns.

What skills will I need to get in?

Usually Practice opt for ACA or ACCA (first time pass), a minimum 2.1 degree and strong A levels. Increasingly post-graduate qualifications assist successful entry. However, they are more interested in the individual. As long as you are dynamic, committed and have solid experience you stand a good chance.

Will the Practice Company support me?

Practice is renowned for its exemplary support. They often make use of external courses in addition to their own in-house training. Funding for further study is also available.

Will I get more money in Practice?

This depends on the recruiter. For example, a Big Four firm certainly offers the best salaries in the industry, and their benefits packages are equally as good. Smaller practices offer competitive salaries in line with private practice. However the experience you gain within Practice will help progress your career further, and therefore any pay increases in the future are likely to be substantially higher.

How can Manpower Professional help?

We can answer any of your questions and advise you as to the best course of action. We have over experience spanning 3 decades and a dedicated brand. Furthermore, we have built up strategic partnerships with Public Practice firms, which has continued to be of benefit to our candidates.
