When deciding to change jobs the first question you need to ask yourself is 'why'?

There are 4 main reasons why people change jobs:

  • Redundancy

  • Greater remuneration

  • Career progression

  • Lack of development or career opportunities within current organisation

As daunting and upsetting as redundancy can be, (as it is not your decision to move) it does give you the opportunity to reassess your career and give you a fresh challenge.

If you are moving purely for more money you will need to think of the following:-

  • What achievements have you made since your last pay review to warrant an increase?

  • Are you underpaid in comparison to others doing your role in your current company and similar jobs elsewhere?

  • Have you spoken to your Line Manager about it?

  • Is it really more money you want or is there another reason for leaving?

  • What does this say to a prospective employer?

If your reason is career progression?

  • Have you explored every avenue with your current employer?

  • Is there any further training and development you need in order to achieve the role you desire?

  • Dissatisfaction with a current employer is a difficult subject as it can cover many different scenarios but it is important how this particular reason is discussed.

  • Is there anything your current company can do to feasibly make you want to stay? And if so have you discussed this with Line Managers/HR Department.

Your reasons for leaving your current company will tell a perspective employer a lot about you so think about this very carefully. Any negativity will put a potential employer off immediately.
